The Question:

How many email mailboxes are there in the world?

The Answer:

The number is staggering. According to statistics compiled by Messaging Online, the worldwide mailbox count soared to 569 million by the end of 1999. In the United States, the number of mailboxes jumped 73% to 333.5 million since the end of 1998.

The statistics show that the typical email user has more than one mailbox. The average corporate emailer has 1.5 mailboxes, while the average emailing household has four mailboxes. An estimated 40% of the U.S. population uses email at work or at home (or both).

The online site notes, "A world with a billion mailboxes—outnumbering televisions and phone lines—is probably only two years away."
