Clarence “Kelly” Johnson invented textruded polystyrene foam which has become a leading means of insulation used in millions of homes and buildings around the world to increase energy efficiency and protect against wind, rain, and moisture. Born in Gardner, Kansas, Johnson studied engineering at the University of Kansas. He then went on to work for Dow Chemical Company where he spent his entire career. During World War II, Johnson accidently produced foam polystyrene when he was tyring to create a rubber-like substance. He died February 2, 1996.
