BUSH, George Herbert Walker, (son of Prescott Sheldon Bush, father of President George W. Bush), a Representative from Texas and a Vice President of the United States and 41st President of the United States; born in Milton, Suffolk County, Mass., June 12, 1924; graduated, Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass. 1942; graduated Yale University 1948; lieutenant (jg.) United States Navy 1942-1945; formed Bush-Overby Oil Development, Inc., Midland, Tex. 1951; helped organize Zapata Petroleum Corp., Midland, Tex. 1953, and first president of Zapata Off-Shore Co., Midland, Tex. 1954; unsuccessful nominee in 1964 to the United States Senate; elected as a Republican to the Ninetieth Congress; reelected to the Ninety-first Congress (January 3, 1967-January 3, 1971); was not a candidate for reelection in 1970 to the House of Representatives but was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate; United States Ambassador to the United Nations 1971-1973; chairman, Republican National Committee 1973-1974; chief United States liaison officer, People’s Republic of China 1974-1976; director, Central Intelligence Agency 1976-1977; unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in 1980, but was elected Vice President of the United States on the Republican ticket with President Ronald Reagan, November 4, 1980, and reelected 1984; Vice President of the United States 1981-1989; elected President of the United States in 1988, and was inaugurated on January 20, 1989; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1992; awarded the title of Knights Grand Cross of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath by Queen Elizabeth II in 1993; is a resident of Houston, Tex.
