John Crain KUNKEL, Congress, PA (1898-1970)
KUNKEL, John Crain, (grandson of John Christian Kunkel, great-grandson of John Sergeant, and great-great-grandson of Jonathan Dickinson Sergeant and Robert Whitehill), a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Harrisburg, July 21, 1898; attended Harrisburg Academy, Harrisburg, Pa. and Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.; graduated from Yale University, New Haven, Conn., 1916; graduated from the law department of Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., 1926; during the First World War served in the Studentsâ Army Training Corps; was admitted to the bar in Oklahoma and Pennsylvania in 1926; banker; farmer; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-sixth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1939-January 3, 1951); was not a candidate for renomination in 1950 but was an unsuccessful candidate for the nomination for United States Senator; county commissioner of Dauphin County, Pa., 1952-1956; elected as a Republican to the Eighty-seventh Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Walter M. Mumma; reelected to the two succeeding Congresses and served until his resignation on December 30, 1966 (May 16, 1961- December 30, 1966); was not a candidate for reelection to the Ninetieth Congress in 1966; died on July 27, 1970, in Harrisburg, Pa.; interment in Harrisburg Cemetery, Harrisburg, Pa.
