Joseph Earlston THROPP, Congress, PA (1847-1927)

THROPP, Joseph Earlston, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Valley Forge, Chester County, Pa., October 4, 1847; attended the public schools and Friends Central High School, Philadelphia, Pa., and was graduated as a civil engineer from the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania in 1868; went to the Middle Northwest and engaged in his profession, constructing docks at Duluth and Fond du Lac, Wis., attaining the position of railroad division engineer; moved to Conshohocken, Pa., in 1870 and engaged in the manufacture of pig iron; subsequently became owner of the Earlston Furnaces, Everett, Pa., in 1888; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1899-March 3, 1901); was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1900 to the Fifty-seventh Congress; retired from active business pursuits and resided in Washington, D.C., and Miami, Fla.; died while on a visit in Quebec, Canada, July 27, 1927; interment in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa.
