Tolkien first published in 1954. Frodo is the adopted son of Bilbo Baggins, and both are hobbits: a race of short, plump, cheerful beings who live in a land known as Middle Earth. Guided by the wizard Gandalf, Frodo becomes the unwilling bearer of the Ring of Power that is at the center of Tolkien's tale.
