Laura San Giacomo was already a veteran actress when she got her first big break as the nasty sister-in-law in the 1989 film sex, lies, and videotape. The small-budget film was a hit with critics and is often credited with kicking off the independent film boom of the 1990s. In 1997 San Giacomo returned to prominence as the co-star of the TV sitcom Just Shoot Me.
