Charpak, Georges

Charpak, Georges (zhôrzh shärpäk') [key], 1924–, French physicist, b. Poland. Affiliated with CERN, Charpak won the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of several particle detectors that have greatly aided scientific experimentation in particle physics. Of these detectors, the multiwire proportional chamber is the most well known.
