Habersham, Joseph

Habersham, Joseph, 1751–1815, political leader in the American Revolution and U.S. Postmaster General (1795–1801), b. Savannah, Ga.; the son of James Habersham. From the beginning, he was active in the Revolutionary cause and rose to be a colonel in the Continental Army. He also served in the Continental Congress and was a member of the Georgia convention that ratified the Constitution of the United States. After service in the cabinet, he was (1802–15) president of the Georgia branch of the Bank of the United States.
