Hofmann, Joseph

Hofmann, Joseph, 1876–1957, Polish-American pianist, b. near Cracow; pupil of Anton Rubinstein. He toured Europe as a child prodigy, making his American debut in 1887 at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City. He was director (1926–38) of the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia. He composed under the pseudonym Michel Dvorsky and was the first professional performer to make recordings of his performances.
