Hurst, John Fletcher

Hurst, John Fletcher, 1834–1903, American Methodist bishop and educator, b. Maryland. He was president of Drew Theological Seminary from 1873 until 1880, when he was elected bishop. Bishop Hurst was founder and chancellor (1891–1902) of American Univ., Washington, D.C., although the university did not open until after his death. His numerous writings include A History of the Christian Church (1897–1900).
