Louganis, Greg E.

Louganis, Greg E. lo͞ogāˈnĭs [key], 1960–, American diver, b. San Diego, Calif. He won gold medals in springboard diving and platform diving in the 1984 Olympics and repeated in both categories in 1988 despite a head injury incurred during the competition. In the 1990s he began a stage career, revealed that he had tested positive for HIV–the virus that causes AIDS–before the 1988 Olympics, and came to be regarded as a spokesperson for gays, especially in the sports community.
