Mörike, Eduard

Mörike, Eduard (ā'dOOärt mö'riku) [key], 180475, German writer and clergyman, a leader of the Swabian school. Over 50 of his rich and varied lyrics, among them “Schlafendes Jesuskind” [the sleeping Child Jesus] and “Auf ein altes Bild” [to an old painting], were set to music by Hugo Wolf. He also wrote a novel, Maler Nolten (1832), and a distinguished novella, Mozart's Journey from Vienna to Prague (1856; tr. 1913–15).
