Sanday, William

Sanday, William, 1843–1920, English theologian and biblical scholar. He was professor of exegesis (1883–95) at Oxford and from 1895 to 1919 Lady Margaret professor of divinity and canon of Christ Church, Oxford. He was joint editor of the Variorum Bible (1880) and won acceptance for new methods of New Testament study among Anglican clergy. Besides commentaries, his many writings include The Authorship and Historical Character of the Fourth Gospel (1872), The Gospels in the Second Century (1876), and The New Testament Background (1918).
