Varchi, Benedetto

Varchi, Benedetto bānādĕtˈtō värˈkē [key], 1502?–1565, Italian poet and historian. A protégé of Filippo Strozzi and Cosimo de' Medici, he was commissioned to write the history of Florence. His Storia fiorentina (16 vol.) covers the period from 1527 to 1538 and is generally an excellent history, far superior to the usual recollections and commentaries of his day.
