Whittredge, Thomas Worthington

Whittredge, Thomas Worthington (hwit'rij) [key], 18201910, American painter, b. Springfield, Ohio. He studied in Paris, Düsseldorf, and Rome before returning to the United States. He is numbered among the practitioners of luminism. His paintings contain a minutely executed tonal quality marked by intense illumination, expressing a mysterious, atmospheric silence. Notable works include the Camp Meeting (1874; Metropolitan Mus.) and Third Beach, Newport (Walker Art Center, Minneapolis).
