Zukerman, Pinchas

Zukerman, Pinchas, 1948–, Israeli violinist and conductor, b. Tel Aviv. A violin protégé of Isaac Stern, he came to the United States in 1962 and made his New York City debut the following year. Zukerman is particularly noted as a chamber music performer. He was musical director of the St. Paul (Minn.) Chamber Orchestra from 1980 to 1987. Zukerman has been the musical director of the National Arts Center Orchestra of Ottawa, Canada, since 1998 while also maintaining a busy schedule as a guest conductor and soloist with other orchestras.
