Southern California, University of

Southern California, University of, at Los Angeles; coeducational; chartered and opened 1880. The university has a liberal arts college and a graduate school as well as schools of architecture, urban and regional planning, engineering, safety and systems management, business administration, cinema and television, music, theatre, communication, education, fine arts, gerontology, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, public administration, and social work. There is a noteworthy fine arts gallery. The university's 15 libraries house outstanding collections in American literature, the biological sciences, Iberian and Latin American studies, business, music, and philosophy. The medical school campus is in downtown Los Angeles.
