Hamilton. <1> City (2020 pop. 4,659), seat of Ravalli co., W Mont; inc. 1894. Located in the Bitteroot Valley, the town was founded by copper baron Marcus Daly. It is the home of the Ravalli Co. Musem, two microbiological research and production facilities (including the government's Rocky Mountain Laboratories), and the Bitterroot College University of Montana. <2>City (2020 pop. 63,399), seat of Butler co., SW Ohio, on the Great Miami River; inc. 1857. Hamilton grew as an agricultural trading and manufacturing center, and paper and pulp mills and machinery manufacturing were important to the economy. Health care, construction, retailing and service industries, and metal products are now the important economic sectors. Hamilton was settled on the site of Fort Hamilton, built in 1791. William Dean Howells was raised there. Points of interest include the Soldiers', Sailors', and Pioneers' Monument, the sculpture park, and the county historical society. Miami Univ. of Ohio has a branch in Hamilton.
