AltonaAltona (äl'tōnä) [key], part of Hamburg, N Germany, a port on the Elbe River. Its manufactures include chemicals, textiles, and tobacco products. There are fisheries, and the district is a rail center. Founded as a fishing village in the 16th cent. and later one of the first free ports in N Europe, Altona was incorporated into Hamburg in 1937.
