Tabora

Tabora täbōˈrä [key], municipality (2012 pop. 226,999), capital of Tabora region, W central Tanzania. It is a trade and transportation center, connected by rail with Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean, Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika, and Mwanza on Lake Victoria. Peanuts, cotton, cattle, tobacco, and other agricultural commodities are shipped. Tabora was founded in 1852 by Arab traders from the Indian Ocean coast and was located at the junction of important caravan routes. It was captured in 1891 by the Germans and became a center of administration of German East Africa.
