Government

Bangladesh is governed by the constitution of 1972 (amended several times). The president is chief of state, a largely ceremonial position, and the prime minister is head of government. There is a 300-seat national assembly, with members popularly elected for five-year terms. The major political parties are the Bangladesh Nationalist party, the Awami League, and the Jatiya party. The nation is divided into 6 administrative districts.
