Government

Panama is governed under the constitution of 1972 as amended. Executive power is held by the president, who is popularly elected for a five-year term and may serve three terms. The unicameral National Assembly has 78 members who are also elected for five years. Administratively the country is divided into nine provinces, plus an autonomous territory for indigenous people.
