Richard D'Oyly Carte theatrical impresario Born: 5/3/1844 Birthplace: London
Having begun his career in his father's business making musical instruments, he is best known for having produced the first Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, a partnership that continued even after his death. He built London's first theatre to be lit using electricity, the Savoy Theatre, in 1881. Died: 4/3/1901
