Ahmed Qurei (Abu Ala)
politician, accepted the position as Palestinian prime minister in September, after Mahmoud Abbas resigned from the post. Qurei, a longtime ally of Yasir Arafat and speaker of the Palestinian parliament, participated in the 1993 secret negotiations that produced the Oslo peace accord between Palestinians and Israelis.
