historian whose reclusive lifestyle gave way to national fame when he provided eloquent commentary to Ken Burns's 1990 Civil War documentary on PBS. The author of six novels, Foote also wrote a three-volume history of the war. Died: Memphis, Tenn., June 27, 2005
