Beautiful or fair as an angel. Throughout the Middle
Ages it was common to associate beauty with virtue, and ugliness with
sin; hence the expressions given above, and the following also—
“Seraphic beauty,” “Cherubic loveliness,” “Ugly as sin,” etc.
