Tub, TubbingTubs, in rowing slang, are gig pairs of college boat clubs, who practice for the term's races. They are pulled on one side when a pair-oar boat in uniform makes its appearance. Tubbing is taking out pairs under the supervision of a coach to train men for taking part in the races. Source: Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, E. Cobham Brewer, 1894
