Thomas BirchBirch, Thomas, 1779–1851, American artist, b. London. Birch settled in Philadelphia in 1793. Famous for his paintings of landscapes and historical scenes, he is also noted for a series of engravings of views of Philadelphia, which he executed with his father. During the War of 1812, Birch painted a series of scenes of naval engagements that includes The Macedonian (1813). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed.
