Garretson, James Edmund

Garretson, James Edmund, 1828–95, American pioneer in oral surgery, b. Wilmington, Del., M.D. Univ. of Pennsylvania, 1859. From 1874 he taught at Philadelphia Dental College (now part of Temple Univ.), serving as dean from 1880. His textbook on oral surgery (1869) was the first and long the standard work in its field. Under the name John Darby he published many popular books.
