Lavater, Johann Kaspar (yōˈhän käsˈpär läˈvätər, läväˈtər) [key], 1741–1801, Swiss theologian and mystic. He wrote several books on metaphysics, but he is chiefly remembered for his work on physiognomy, the art of determining character from facial characteristics.
