Pedro de Oña

Oña, Pedro de (pāˈħrō ħā ōˈnyä) [key], 1570?–1643, Chilean poet. Having been born in Latin America, he is considered Chile's first national poet. His poetry is both epic and religious. Inspired by La aravcana, by Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga, he wrote the epic Arauco domado (1596; tr. Arauco Tamed, 1948). Other works include El vasauro (1635), a religious poem, and El Ignacio de Cantabria (1639), a pious work celebrating St. Ignatius of Loyola.
