Traviès de Villers, Charles Joseph

Traviès de Villers, Charles Joseph shärl zhôzĕfˈ trävyĕsˈ də vēlĕrˈ [key], 1804–59, French caricaturist and painter, b. Switzerland. He founded and was a prolific contributor to the popular journal Charivari (1831) and drew for Caricature (1838). His witty burlesques of Parisian life were very popular. He helped to illustrate Balzac's works (1848–55).
