Trudeau, Garry Beekman

Trudeau, Garry Beekman tro͞oˈdō [key], 1948–, American political cartoonist, b. New York City. Since its debut in 1969, his comic strip “Doonesbury” has satirized contemporary events, personalities, and lifestyles, and because it has addressed such controversial issues as Watergate, the drug culture, homelessness, and homosexuality, many newspapers have run the strip on the editorial page. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1975 for editorial cartooning. In 1983 he coauthored a stage version of the comic strip. 40: A Doonesbury Retrospective (2010) is a compendium of decades of representative strips.
