John Greenleaf Whittier

Introduction

Whittier, John Greenleaf (hwĭtˈēər) [key], 1807–92, American Quaker poet and reformer, b. near Haverhill, Mass. Whittier was a pioneer in regional literature as well as a crusader for many humanitarian causes.
