Winterhalter, Franz Xaver

Winterhalter, Franz Xaver fränts ksävârˈ vĭnˈtərhälˌtər [key], 1806–73, German portrait painter. Most of European royalty sat for him, and his decorative pictures of court figures are in leading European galleries. Empress Eugénie is thought to have posed for his Florinda (Metropolitan Mus.). His Susannah and the Elders is in the Seattle Art Museum.
