paregoric

paregoric (pârˌəgôrˈĭk) [key], alcoholic solution of opium and camphor first prepared in the 18th cent. Because of the constipating effect of opium, paregoric has been used to control diarrhea. It was formerly a constituent of many cough elixirs.
