collect (kŏlˈĕkt) [key] [Late Lat., = meeting], in Western liturgies, short prayer proper to an occasion, often asking a particular favor. In the Roman Catholic Church the collect is said, typically, at Mass just before the epistle and at vespers. It occurs correspondingly in the Anglican and Lutheran liturgies. Many collects are very ancient, especially those of the Sundays and major feasts.
