lemures

lemures (lĕmˈərāsˌ, –yərēzˌ) [key], in Roman religion, vampirelike ghosts of the dead; also called larvae. To exorcise these malevolent spirits from the home, the Romans held rites, the Lemuria (May 9, 11, 13).
