Sydney, University of

Sydney, University of, at Sydney, Australia, founded 1850, as Australia's first university. It began with a small faculty of arts, acquired a new campus in 1855, added faculties of law, medicine, and science in the 1880s and 90s, and continued to expand in the 20th cent. Its music conservatory, college of the arts, three museums (with art, antiquities, and natural history collections), and theater complex are important additions to Sydney's cultural life.
