Fort Sam Houston

Fort Sam Houston, U.S. army facility, S Tex., in San Antonio; headquarters of the U.S. Army North and the U.S. Army South. In 2010 it was amalgamated with Lackland and Randolph air force bases to create Joint Base San Antonio. San Antonio, long a military center, donated land in 1870 for the site of a permanent military post that was constructed from 1876 to 1890 and named for Gen. Sam Houston. The famous Brooke Army Medical Center and the main army medical training center are located on the post.
