Founded (1905) as a suburban development by Cleveland businessmen Oris and Mantis Van Sweringen, it takes its name from a Shaker community that once existed there (1822–89). It is a beautiful city of imposing houses, squares, and wide boulevards, part of "the Heights" area, which also includes the cities of Beachwood, Cleveland Heights, South Euclid, and University Heights.
