Waynesboro

Waynesboro, city (1990 pop. 18,549), surrounded by but politically independent of August co., central Va., in the Shenandoah valley; settled c.1736, inc. as a city 1948. An industrial center in a farm area, it has plants manufacturing textiles, furniture, and wood and metal products. In the battle of Waynesboro (Mar., 1865), Gen. Jubal Early's heavily outnumbered Confederate troops were severely defeated by a detachment of Sheridan's army under Custer. Tourists are drawn to nearby Sherando Lake Recreation Area, George Washington National Forest, and Shenandoah National Park.
