Etawah

Etawah (ĭtäˈwə) [key], city (1991 pop. 124,072), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India, on the Yamuna River and the Delhi-Kanpur railroad. It is a district administrative center and a market for grain, oilseed, handloom fabrics, and ghee (clarified butter). The town was held by the Rajputs from the 12th to the 16th cent., when it became the seat of a Muslim governor. In the 17th cent. it was a banking and commercial center. Etawah was occupied by rebels during the 1857 Indian Mutiny against the British.
