Occupying the site of the medieval Chase of Malvern (a royal forest of 7,000 acres/2,833 hectares), the town has become a health (mineral springs) and holiday resort. Malvern College, an independent coeducational school, was founded in 1862. The priory church of Great Malvern dates from 1085; the Norman arches of the interior remain intact. The annual Malvern festival of dramatics, associated with the plays of G. B. Shaw, was instituted in 1928.
