Kosrae, island and state (1990 est. pop. 7,435), c.42 sq mi (110 sq km), Federated States of Micronesia. The easternmost island group of the Caroline Islands, Kosrae consist of a larger central island (Kosrae), several small islands, and a narrow fringing reef. The island of Kosrae is the only inhabited portion of the state. Of volcanic origin, it rises to two peaks, the highest of which is Mt. Crozer (2,079 ft/634 m). Lele is the island's main harbor. Principal crops are copra, taro, and tropical fruits. There also are guano deposits. Kosrae was visited by Europeans in the early 19th cent. and ruled successively by Spain, Germany, and Japan before coming under United States control after World War II. There are ruins of ancient stone walls and dikes. Kosrae was formerly called Kusaie or Kuseie.
