Madagascar

Government

Madagascar is governed under the constitution of 1992 as amended. The president, who is head of state, is elected by popular vote for a five-year term and is eligible for a second term. The government is headed by a prime minister, who is appointed by the president. There is a bicameral legislature. The Senate has 100 members, two thirds of which are selected by regional assemblies; the rest are appointed by the president. Members of the 160-seat National Assembly are popularly elected. All legislators serve four-year terms. Administratively, Madagascar is divided into 22 regions.
