Nanning

Nanning nänˈnĭngˈ [key], city (1994 est. pop. 829,400), capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, S China, on the Xi River in a fertile farming area. The city has a medium-sized integrated iron and steel complex, a sugar refinery, other food-processing plants, and factories making fertilizer, machine tools, paper, cement, and farm machinery. The city is on the Hunan-Guangxi RR to Vietnam and was an important base for supplies going to North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Guangxi Univ., a medical college, and an agricultural institute are there.
