AmecamecaAmecameca (ämā"kämā'kä) [key], town (1990 pop. 25,374), Mexico state, S central Mexico, at the foot of the Popocatépetl and Ixtacíhuatl volcanoes. The sanctuary of El Sacro Monte, the most venerated spot in Mexico after the shrine of Guadalupe, stands on a hill above Amecameca. The town's history dates back to 1200.
