chiffonchiffon (shifon') [key], plain-weave, lightweight, sheer, transparent fabric made of cotton, silk, or synthetic fiber; it is made of fine, highly twisted, strong yarn. Chiffon is difficult to handle, but it drapes and wears well and is very durable despite its light weight. It is piece-dyed or piece-printed and may be given a soft or stiff finish. Among its uses are in evening dresses, formal blouses, trimmings, and scarfs. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed. Copyright © 2007, Columbia University Press. All rights reserved.
